I am very proud to say that the city I live in, Rochester Hills, is now considered one of the greenest cities in Michigan. The city has launched an innovative recycle program that will hopefully be sweeping the nation soon.
Mayor Bryan K. Barnett said, “This is a historic day for our city and a huge win for our residents. When so many governmental agencies are taking money out of people’s pockets, we are putting money back into our residents’ hands. In these tough economic times, I believe our residents and environment will greatly benefit from this ground breaking program.”
Rochester Hills is the first city to offer the incentive based recycling program called RecycleBank. This innovative recycling program will establish Rochester Hills as a green leader in the State of Michigan. Residents who participate in the recycling program will earn points each week and become eligible to receive exclusive coupons that can be redeemed at national and local businesses in the community. This program will increase recycling, decrease landfill use, save trees and oil, and return cash to our local businesses and economy. The new list of recyclable materials is guaranteed to be the most comprehensive in the state.
A 95-gallon cart for trash and a 65-gallon cart for recycling were provided to all single-family homes. Best of all, the cost of my yearly trash pickup service decreased and I no longer have to separate all of my recycled materials. That’s right folks, all the paper, plastic, cardboard and cans all in one big green garbage can with wheels. Sweet!

Well I did it, today I joined Brighter Planet’s 350 Challenge.
After shattering their goal of 350 bloggers in under a month, they decided to keep the 350 Challenge open indefinitely. Now over 1,600 bloggers are participating. To join in, post the badge to your site, register on their website, and they’ll offset 350 pounds of carbon in your name. That’s like flicking off 100 lightbulbs for a day, or according to their website, going two full weeks without your car.
Brighter Planet helps people measure, reduce and offset their carbon footprints. They believe that carbon offsets play a crucial role in building a sustainable society. Many renewable energy projects are well suited to produce energy and meet stringent standards, but lack sufficient financing. Carbon offsets fill that void by investing in these projects.

I did a little more research on carbon offsetting and found some very informative information on Wikipedia:
A carbon offset is a financial instrument representing a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Although there are six primary categories of greenhouse gases, carbon offsets are measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2e). One carbon offset represents the reduction of one metric ton of carbon dioxide, or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases.
There are two primary markets for carbon offsets. In the larger compliance market, companies, governments or other entities buy carbon offsets in order to comply with caps on the total amount of carbon dioxide they are allowed to emit.
In the much smaller voluntary market, individuals, companies, or governments purchase carbon offsets to mitigate their own greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, electricity use, and other sources. For example, an individual might purchase carbon offsets to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions caused by personal air travel.
Offsets are typically generated from emissions-reducing projects. The most common project type is renewable energy, such as wind farms, biomass energy, or hydroelectric dams. Other common project types include energy efficiency projects, the destruction of industrial pollutants or agricultural byproducts, destruction of landfill methane, and forestry projects.
Carbon offsetting as part of a “carbon neutral” lifestyle has gained some appeal and momentum mainly among consumers in western countries who have become aware and concerned about the potentially negative environmental effects of energy-intensive lifestyles and economies. The Kyoto Protocol has sanctioned offsets as a way for governments and private companies to earn carbon credits which can be traded on a marketplace. The protocol established the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), which validates and measures projects to ensure they produce authentic benefits and are genuinely “additional” activities that would not otherwise have been undertaken. Organizations that have difficulty meeting their emissions quota are able to offset by buying CDM-approved Certified Emissions Reductions. The CDM encourages projects that involve, for example, renewable energy production, changes in land use, and forestry, although not all trading countries allow their companies to buy all types of credit.
The commercial system has contributed to the increasing popularity of voluntary offsets among private individuals, companies, and organizations as well as investment in clean technologies, clean energy and reforestation projects around the world. Offsets may be cheaper or more convenient alternatives to reducing one’s own fossil-fuel consumption. However, some critics object to carbon offsets, and question the benefits of certain types of offsets.

I got the following recipe from a gal that writes a fabulous blog, NeedleCloud. I definitely suggest checking her out. Her blog covers her journey towards living greener in Chicago, one of my favorite cities.
Enjoy making these treats for your little pup. I suggest using all-natural peanut butter and organic milk.
Ingredients:
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup natural peanut butter
1 cup skim milk
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk. Add wet mixture to dry, and mix well. Turn out dough on a lightly floured surface and knead.
Roll out to 1/4-inch thick and cut out shapes with a cookie cutter or just cut them into small squares with a pizza cutter. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake 20 minutes or until lightly brown.
Cool on a rack then store in an airtight container.
Makes 30 large bones

This morning I was on the phone with Jeff Spring from Pet Habitats, a small company that is dedicated to “improving the lives of pets and their people.” Pet Habitats has developed and patented the world’s first flushable dog poop bag, Flusheze™. The bag is unique in that is dissolves instantly in the toilet. They really are the best earth-friendly disposable alternative to plastic bags, and from the sounds of it, they even beat out the up-and-coming “bio-bags.”
Jeff gave me a little lesson on so-called “bio-bags.” According to Jeff, many of these bio-bags that have become so popular don’t even meet standards for biodegradable products in every state, and are not designed to break down in all landfills. Most biodegradable bags are still petroleum-based, and while they do break down into smaller particles, chemicals eventually show up in the food chain and our bodies.
Jeff pointed out an even bigger problem to me, bio-bags do not solve the bigger environmental problem of putting dog waste in the trash. Studies show that dog waste can be toxic to groundwater, lakes, and rivers, contributing parasites and bacteria such as E. coli. The solution he suggests is for pet owners to flush dog waste into the sewer so it can be treated properly by wastewater treatment facilities. That said, you should check with your city since every city a has a different stance on pet waste disposal, and it’s best to check with the water bureau in your area.
Has anyone tried these bags? How do you handle pet waste at your home?
P.S. A standard plastic bag will take 500 to 1,000 years to degrade.

As you all know, my fiancé and I will soon be bringing home a new puppy. In an attempt to save my furniture and my sanity, not to mention my shoes, I am on a search to find the best eco-friendly and puppy safe chew toys. A while back I wrote a blog entry about “worm poop tea,” or liquid plant food made from waste, by the company TerraCycle. In the meantime TerraCycle has come out with a huge list of recycled products. Including, cool tote bags made from old drink pouches, fire logs made from 100% wax cardboard waste and a huge list of office supplies made from used newspaper, old Oreo wrappers and pretty much anything else you can think of. In one word ingenious. I now want to own one of everything on their product list.
I recently received their new TerraCycle Wild Bird Premium Feeder. It’s fashioned out of an old 2-liter bottle and the base is made out of recycled plastic. The product carries a Zerofootprint™ Seal.
I did some further research on the Zerofootprint Seal and found that “the Zerofootprint group of companies empowers communities, companies, and organizations to live ingeniously in a low carbon world.” You can read more about them at http://www.zerofootprint.net/. They have an awesome One Minute Calculator that enables you to get a quick measure of your carbon footprint. From some basic information that you provide about your lifestyle, it will give you an estimate of your carbon emissions in 60 seconds or less. Take the test here.
Last week I hung the bird feeder up from the tree in my backyard. I can see all the little birdies from my office window and they are devouring that thing. It just makes my day a little sweeter. When it’s completely empty, I plan on refilling it again, and again. It’s a good thing.
I definitely plan on trying out more of their products in the near future. Maybe on my new puppy…

It has been a while since my last post, but I am back and armed with even more eco-friendly pet information.
My fiancé and I are getting a new puppy in just 5 short weeks. We are doing all our research, reading up on puppy training, socializing your new puppy and puppy proofing your home. In the coming weeks I will be writing about eco-friendly puppy toys, chews, bitter sprays, bedding and food. If you are interested in pet product reviews, please send the information my way. A fellow member of Sustainalane introduced me to Merill’s All-Natural Compost Tea. Sustainalane is a community-powered directory of green products and businesses. Anyone can create a profile and contribute to the ever-growing directory.
This is not the first time I’ve heard of “compost tea,” but Merill’s is all organic and can be delivered right to your door.
“Compost Tea is an organic, nutritionally rich, highly-concentrated liquid extract made by steeping aged compost in water. When the tea is made with well-balanced, aged, premium-quality compost, it is alive and teaming with healthy microorganisms and nutrients your soil and plants crave. The tea can be used in place of water when watering your plants, either as a root drench or directly on the foliage. The nutrient-rich tea is readily absorbed into the roots and foliage of your plants for almost immediate results!”
Another green company, TerraCycle, produces Worm Tea. They even re-use old plastic soda bottles as packaging for the product. The idea for the company was conceived by two students from Princeton University. The young students began by reprocessing solid waste from the university’s dining halls and by the end of their summer experiment they had reduced the time it took to recycle waste from 1 year to 14 days.
How did they do it? Vermiculture! TerraCycle manufactures all-natural garden fertilizer by feeding organic waste to worms and bottling the resulting worm poop compost tea as ready-to use plant food. The plant food can be sprayed directly onto houseplants, gardens and lawns. It can even be distributed through irrigation facilities for mass agricultural use.
“TerraCycle’s products are environmentally beneficial, from production to application.”
TerraCycle collects the used soda bottles it uses for packaging by organizing environmental fundraisers at elementary schools. The schools conduct a 3-week event where thy collect 20 oz. used plastic bottles.
